Children from Our Secret Garden, at Newbury's First Parish Church, are involved in a six-week long enrichment class called “Food for the Soul” taught by their teacher Kristine Soares. Felicity Fisher and Mariella Hull, both 5, watch as Soares cuts up a leek to be used in a potato leek soup the children are helping to prepare learning how simple ingredients can turn into something delicious while providing nourishment. Part of the lessons included the fact that not everyone can afford to buy these items on a regular basis and that there are people in their own neighborhoods who often go hungry. Before making the soup the children brought food items from home upstairs to the Newbury Community Food Pantry and helped sort them onto shelves.
